He lived for many years in the village of Karaudanau where he was Headmaster of that school. R.I.P. Uncle Alex |
On Saturday morning (December 31, 2016) at four o’clock, he went to bathe at the same creek with a torchlight. I was still sleeping when I heard him say, “Elaine, you ready. Let’s go early. We can come back and do our work. We will be back just now”. And they went to Kumaka to greet everybody and say “Happy Old Year and we don’t know for next year”. They also went to visit Aunty Dolly, then back to Kumaka to buy his things. They then got a transfer to come home by bus. When they arrived home, he said “we now come” and I prepared food for them. I cook fish and cassava, his favourite dish. He said “I am tired” and went to rest in a hammock. At about 2 0’clock, he went to visit one of his brothers nearby then at five o’clock left to bathe at the river.

While going to bathe, he did not see the snake before it bit him. He said he felt like his small toe was stuck by a needle. When he looked, he saw the labaria and took a piece of wood and killed the snake. We were looking out to see when he was coming back. When I heard him call, I looked at him and he was crying, “Ask Terence to call for a car to come for me”. He was rushed to the hospital and while on the way, he said “I know something was going to happen to me”. He was admitted to the hospital but there was no treatment for that blood spilling but he was given saline. He continued to suffer great pain until they left for Suddie at 9.0 clock and sadly for him, the boat broke down in the ocean for four hours and reached Charity Hospital at 3.0 clock. Next morning the nurse admitted him and the doctor said “you have to go at Suddie”. Daddy was still talking to Mommy at this time. By the time they reached Suddie, he didn’t know anything how he was. The nurse told Mommy, “your husband will die” while he cried in pain. He left us to grieve for him up to now. Thank God he was with Mommy who brought him back home because she had no money, but God showed her the way to reach back to Moruca. He was buried at six miles Catholic Church. Rest in Peace, Daddy. James Sherman Rodrigues - November 22, 2013 - Tribute written by his sister Maria Vaulda Rodrigues..."Growing up with you was the best. The first story I heard of with Jim was when I was still in the hospital as a baby and he first came to see me (3yrs old) when Mom turned around and came back he was trying to feed me with biscuits. Second memory is while we were taken to Auntie Milly to spend the day while everyone else went to work. While I was all excited to play with Van, Jim was big enough to realize he was being left for the day he would cry say "Todoy Todoy come back Todoy" he was wishing Theodore to come back and get us. While Jim was in Big Prep A (Tr. Katie's class) I was allowed to tag along although I was not registered to go to school and he took me willingly. Next memory is me going from one mango tree to the next in search for the rosiest mango to keep for Jim and Tess. Thanks Jim for bringing me home when I had a sore eye and the teachers sent me home. Thanks for allowing me to follow you around while you discover the birds and fruits and showing me how to use a sling shot. Thanks for always being patient with me. Thanks for taking me to many many parties and having fun and can still hear you say " You have to dance your money's worth" I remember both of us getting licks from Tr. Cecil because we were not going to lie" Thanks for sharing your last dime with me when we were students in GT and you would take me to the movies and to the gardens. There are many more memories that will live with me and my other siblings and your children and wife will have their own memories. Rest in Peace Jim knowing that we will keep your memory alive. I am sorry that you did not enjoy good health in the last 15 years but you did the best you could and I know it must not have been easy. The last words you said to me was "God is Love" I know he loves you and decided it was time to take you home with him. Mom and Dad must be waiting there for you too so I say so long my brother until we meet again....Love always your sister Val."
