February 2016 - Excerpt from the Guyana Foundation Group.....
"Yesterday, GF’s Managing Director Anthony Autar and photographer James Deeges traveled in to Moruca, Region One, to oversee the distribution of 7 barrels of stationery and school supplies.
These items were donated by Mr. Gary Wills and a team of generous donors from Canada, who we have partnered with over the past years on similar projects. This year, items were distributed to students of the Santa Rosa Secondary School, and St. Nicholas Primary in the nearby village of Manawarin.....more"
October 2015 - They've done it again !!!!!
Thank you, Gary and Lisa. They have just shipped nine barrels to Guyana - 2 for St. Nicholas Primary School in Manawarin, 5 for Santa Rosa Secondary School and 2 for Guyana Foundation for their Christmas Pageant. Gary raised funds by selling baked goods at his work over the past few months to cover the cost of the postage. I must not forget to say thanks to his colleagues wh...o supported his efforts by buying his baked goods and also by contributing books and other supplies for the barrels. He and Lisa packed up their car and took all the stuff they collected over several months to Q-Trex where they packed their barrels for shipping to Guyana. A lot of work and I am quite humbled by their efforts. Thank you guys.
Toy Day - March 21, 2015
Pic of the Canadians who travelled to Moruca on March 13th, 2015. The rookies were Madison and Mia (Chris's daughters) and Max (Lisa's youngest son).
Some stayed at Vibert's guest house and others with Dolly. I had to sleep in a room by myself (I'm such a frightened Friday) !! lol Good thing I had electricity up to 10 pm - also a solar light and a flashlight - so I was ready for anything !! I woke up every morning around 4.30 a.m and Dolly and I would sit and have coffee by candlelight and flashlight as electricity came on at 5 a.m. Cherished memories :-) |
March 21st, 2015 - Calm before the storm....unpacking and setting up in the parish hall - a million thanks to our usual helpers - Dolly, Min & little Dolly, Tr Attie, Whanita, Alexi, Jenn, Carol, Thecla, Cindy and Betty
Some last minute instructions before everyone manned (mostly wommaned :-P) their post!!
After a successful Clothing Sale and Raffle - a total of G$113,000 was collected and handed over to the Presbytery fund. Thanks to all who helped make this a very successful Toy Drive...we will be back in 2017 !!! Cheers !!!

March 2013 - Santa Rosa, Moruca
March 2013 - another successful Toy Distribution - Canadian style !!
Our group has been to Moruca and back - for the experienced like Steph and I, it was a breeze - because there was no rain - what a lovely sunny day we had.....plus now we have taxis to transport the barrels up the hill !!! lol Gary, Lisa and Chris took it all in stride - Gary was the Raffle guy, Lisa packaged the Raffle baskets - what a creative girl she is!! Chris eventually was in charge of the Candy table and as the day grew hotter and the line seemed longer, he took a basket of candy and started distributing to the kids at the end of the line...wished we had a barrel of candies !!
Toys were distributed on Sunday March 10th, 2013 - starting at 2 p.m. in the Parish Hall. We handed out toys and candy to approximately 300 - 350 kids. The adults were allowed to choose clothing and shoes once the kids' portion was done...many of the adults hung around the baby clothing table.
Raffle !! Raffle !!
Aunty Bonny winning the Barrel
As usual, the Raffle was a hit - Lisa created four hampers and Gary was in charge of selling tickets. Aunty Bonny won the Barrel - yes, this is a hot item... Minerva won a hamper as well - she got the much prized basket ball and jersey plus other items. I cannot remember who won the two other hampers. Anyway, we made approx Guy$ 37,000 from the sale of the Raffle tickets and the cash was handed over to Father Wilian towards repairs to the Presbytery.
The Canucks - 2013 Team !!
Let's hope for nice sunny weather this year!! It rained heavily last year so we had to squeeze the children into the Parish Hall.
It has been a hard winter here in Canada and we are all looking forward to the warm weather in Guyana. We are particularly happy because Steph's children, Lisa and Chris, will be making the trip to Moruca with us. And we must not forget Gary, who is looking forward to this trip more than anyone else and plans to do so many things in the few days that we will spend in Moruca. He wants to swim, fish and take lots of pictures. During the toy distribution, we will once again provide a beverage and a slice of cake to the folks who attend and we will give out candies to the kids.
We're trying to get Uncle Basil Rodrigues to arrange to have the banchikili group play for us. We will also have a number of prizes to be raffled off and the proceeds will be given to Father Wilian to help with the restoration of the presbytery. The drive this year is scheduled for Sunday, March 10th at 2.00 p.m.

Thanks!!
Our donations have grown to a tidy sum of CAD$215.00 (not sure what the conversion rate is exactly but I would think about Guy$43,000)...Separately CAD$60.00 (approx Guy$11,000) was donated toward food items/50-50 draw etc for Aunty Phyllis.....thanks to all!!
Update: "Kayap" day - Sunday October 14th, 2012
Last workday (Sunday, September 16th) we accomplished quite a lot - thanks Maria Vaulda, Lisa, Sam, and Steph!! We sorted and packed and ordered Pizza for lunch. Steph's kitchen was being renovated so everything was packed into the living room - including fridge and stove !! However lunch was delicious - Since then we have more donations of clothing and toys and so we have another fun day (I hope) ? planned for Sunday October 14th, 2012. We did get a lot accomplished last time but people have been donating toys and clothing so we have a few more bags to sort out...hopefully we can get a few barrels packed and addressed.
Some pics below of our two "Kayaps" - thanks to Vaulda whose help is ongoing - she is always ready to lend a hand and is always sending little parcels in the barrel to the Moruca folk -

Update on the Toy Distribution - Canadian edition - "Kayap" day - Sunday Sept. 16, 2012
Toy Drive 2013! The Canucks are coming - again! Jean, Euge and I had a first look at the chaos in my basement today. There are toys and clothing in bags that I haven't even opened as yet. These are scattered all over my basement. Many thanks to Gary Wills and his co-workers for their large contribution, to Jemmie Robles for her contribution, Chris Tudela for hers, Chris Walls for his contribution and to Margaret Clarke, our cousin, for her monetary donation.
A team of ladies are coming over to my house on Sunday and we will sort and pack as much as we can. Just so everyone knows, we won't be in Guyana till March 1, 2013. Pictures to follow after the "kayap" on Sunday. "Kayap" lunch will have to be pizza and pop, as I am having my kitchen retiled and we won't be able to use it by Sunday. Wish us luck. Looking forward to Guyana 2013!!!

Moruca Toy Drive Newsletter 2012- Canadian Effort
We're off !! Moruca here we come !!
Steph, Samantha and I are off to do the deed on January 23rd, 2012 - Euge, we will miss you on this trip - who will do our raffle???
The five barrels have arrived safely in Moruca - thanks to my nieces, great-nephew and the kind driver in GT who transported the five barrels to the Wharf....also the Moruca group who helped to get the barrels to their destination - it is mind b0ggling to visualise how these barrels get to their destination - over land and sea, hill and dale - and in a small boat along the Moruca river!!
We plan to distribute the toys on Sunday January 29th at 3 p.m. I don't want to estimate the number of kids we plan to cater to but five barrels hold a lot of toys. We hope most kids will get something - our age limit is set to 12 and below or we will run out of toys!!-
Sam is a Canadian who has been to Moruca a few times and we have nicknamed her the Pied Piper as kids seem to follow her wherever she went - I think her freckles were the attraction lol!! plus she is unafraid of bugs, spiders or snakes... Steph and I are not as brave :-(
We are looking forward to this event - and we tentatively want to plan a lunch for the Seniors but this depends on timing - we don't have a lot of days in Moruca and we will depend on the many ladies and my sister and brother-in-law to help with the cooking so this part is iffy !!
Pack your rain gear ladies as I hear "rain ah fall heavy!!!" LOL
Again thanks to all the Canadians who donated (over and over again) - - this effort is truly Canadian !! - and to our cousin Maggie in the US who has been very supportive and generous towards this venture...thanks Mags!!!
